Ophthalmology Residency

UT Health Austin is the clinical practice of Dell Medical School, and it is home to the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute. The Eye Institute is home to both faculty and resident clinics. The Eye Institute clinic is adjacent to the Ambulatory Surgery Center, which is where faculty and resident surgeries are performed. The resident clinics care for the uninsured and under-insured population of Travis County.

Residents are under the supervision of Moe Aung, Eileen Bowden, Eric Crowell and Gene Kim.

The Austin Outpatient Clinic of the Central Texas Veterans Administration Health Care System provides general and subspecialty eye care for many Austin metro area veterans. Third- and fourth-year residents rotate at VA outpatient clinics for four months per academic year. Residents are the primary clinician and surgeon for patients under their care.

Residents are under the supervision of Christopher Helpert and Olivia Lee.

Austin Retina Associates is a large private practice of fellowship-trained vitreo-retinal surgeons. The practice has a robust research arm that facilitates the participation of faculty, residents and medical students in national collaborative research studies. Residents rotate through the practice and receive major portions of their vitreous and retinal training from physicians in the practice.

Residents are under the supervision of James Dooner, Shelley Day Ghafoori, Clio Harper, Mark Levitan, Jose Martinez, Peter Nixon, Philip Storey, Robert Wong and Edward Wood.

Retina Consultants of Austin is a private practice of fellowship-trained medical and vitreo-retinal surgeons. Residents rotate through the practice and receive significant portions of their vitreous and retinal training from physicians in the practice.

Residents are under the supervision of Saradha Chexal and Chirag Jhaveri.

TOC Eye and Face is an academic private practice of fellowship-trained ophthalmologists who subspecialize in diseases of the eyelids and adnexa, orbit, lacrimal system as well as cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and face. Residents receive most of their oculoplastic clinical and surgical experience here, as well as through TOC’s didactic programs.

Residents are under the supervision of Irina Belinsky, Sean Blaydon, Vikram Durairaj and Tanuj Nakra.

Residents gain exposure to pediatric ophthalmology and pediatric and adult strabismus at Dell Children’s and Dell Children’s Eye Center, supported by a group of fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologists. Residents have the opportunity to experience inpatient and outpatient practice settings.

Residents are under the supervision of Amber Fenton, Megan Geloneck, Lan Hoang and Kathryn Maier.

Austin Eye is a comprehensive ophthalmology and refractive surgery practice in Austin. Residents receive advanced refractive surgical training at this site. They assist in surgery and learn all aspects of refractive anterior segment surgery and LASIK.

Residents are under the supervision of Shannon Wong.

Residents gain exposure to cornea, external disease and refractive surgery during this rotation.

Residents are under the supervisions of Lena Dixit, Kimberly Golde and Ravi Patel.
